150th Fort Blakeley
On April 9, 1865, one of the final acts of the American Civil War was being played out. In Virginia, Lee and Grant sat down at a Virginia crossroads to talk out terms of surrender. In North Carolina Sherman and Johnston were in the final moments of their campaign. Often forgotten is the actions in the Deep South. In one final lunge 16,000 men in Blue arose with a great “ Huzzah” to storm the works of Fort Blakeley, Alabama. Defending the line on that April day were Confederate units whose names would become Infamous: Cockerel’s Missouri Brigade, 5th company Washington Light Artillery, and thousands of other men in blue & gray, all in this last death struggle. Join Blakeley State Park, the Independent Rifles, and the Liberty Guards in a 150th recreation of one of the last great battles of the Civil War. Program will include interpretation in the trenches, the final hours of Redoubt 4, and several other historical immersion and interpretation opportunity . Unit portrayals will be Cockrell’s Missouri Brigade and the 83rd Ohio Infantry.
